THE MAJESTY OF CHRISTMAS

     While our society often admires strands of twinkling lights adorning a house or tree, the majesty of Christmas is about a life-giving light that shines in the darkness (John 1:4-5) for a world filled with people walking in darkness (Isaiah 9:2a).

     While our society highly esteems athletes, movie stars, and singers and often tends to follow every action or word of these well-known celebrities on social media to a fanatical degree, the majesty of Christmas came through heavenly media to a seemingly unknown teenage girl who was highly favored by God and who learned from an angel that she would “…give birth to a son, and…give him the name Jesus” (Luke 1:31). Not only did the angel further declare that “He will be great and…called the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:32) but the majesty of Christmas continues inasmuch as “at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow…and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10-11). 

     While our society tends to favor those who are “up and coming” in terms of position, prestige, and profession, the majesty of Christmas is about “good news of great joy that will be for all people” despite any differences in background, experience, or walk of life (Luke 2:10).

     While our society relishes the proud, the popular, and the powerful, the majesty of Christmas focuses on the humility of “a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:12) who will “reign…with justice and righteousness”(Isaiah 9:7).

     While our society has longed for months for an announcement about a vaccine designed to combat the spread of a contagious virus, the majesty of Christmas is the announcement by an angel to Joseph that “you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21) and a subsequent announcement to some shepherds that “Today has been born for you in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).   

     While our society may occasionally talk about peace and express a desire for peace, the majesty of Christmas is true and lasting peace that comes because “…unto us a child is born…and He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

     Yes, the majesty of Christmas is everything that “…took place to fulfill what the LORD had said through the prophet: `The virgin…will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel’ – which means ‘God with us’”  as “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld His glory, the glory of the One and Only who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (Matthew 1:22-23 & John 1:14).
